Your thesis

During the first year most of your time will be devoted to course work, but you should also start to think about a thesis topic. It is normally not possible to come up with a good topic immediately. By taking courses, participating in seminars and interacting with supervisors and other senior researchers and students, you should be able at least to define an area of interest. Then, through iteration with the appropriate supervisor, you should be able to arrive at an appropriate research topic during the second year.

It is advisable not to solely take courses during the second year, but rather to leave two courses or so for the third year, when the research topic is decided upon. The last courses may then serve as specialization courses, possibly at other universities, in the chosen field.

All doctoral students should present your reserach during the programme. After passing about 50 per cent of the programme, your are supposed to present a status report to the group of supvervisors at the department.  About six months prior to the defence of your thesis the final seminar will be held.

The requirement for a PhD thesis is three to four papers that are publishable in relevant journals. If you cooperate with other authors your personal contributions must be able to be identified. You must have written at least one the papers on your own.
