Master Programmes

Master of Science in Economics, 120 ECTS

The Master of Science in Economics is a programme that combines advanced analytical tools with policy applications. The teachers are active researchers, so the students get acquainted with the research frontier during the courses as well as the possibility to use their knowledge in more applied settings.

Through a number of elective courses students can specialise either in demanding and theoretical courses, preparing for PhD studies, or choose more applied courses. These courses are designed to meet the increasing demand for professionals with top quality skills in both the private and public sector and as well as in international organisations.

As an Economics Master student at the University of Gothenburg, you will meet knowledgeable and dedicated teachers and your classmates are from all around the world. During the two years, you will develop your knowledge to a new level and almost all our graduates now hold advanced positions where they make use of the skills they achieved during their studies.

Master of Science in Finance, 120 ECTS

The Master of Science in Finance has clear objectives, related to applying the knowledge. The graduates should be able to demonstrate a deep analytical knowledge and an operational understanding of financial concepts, thereby having attained skills sufficient to apply financial theory to practical problems and working knowledge of empirical tools including software programmes from professional financial vendors and investment banks.

To this end, the programme is designed to equip students with a strong foundation in analytical and empirical analysis, and to educate them more generally about the research process in finance and related disciplines. Thus, the programme is primarily professionally oriented, leading to a job in the financial or business sector.

Graduates can work as, for example, fund managers, security analysts, risk managers, asset allocation specialists, financial engineers, hedge fund analysts, and traders. Career opportunities are chiefly with asset management companies, brokerages and investment banks, hedge funds, private banks and pension funds.
