General information

Here is some general information about the doctoral programme at the Department of Economics. For more detailed information about the doctorial studies see the section From admission to a PhD degree.

Applicants should be aware that admission is very competitive. Last time there were about 150 applicants for start in autumn 2018. 2016. Successful applicants typically have very good grades and an excellent Master (MSc) thesis. Additional courses in mathematics or statistics are also advantageous, as well as letters of recommendation from faculty.

Structure of the programme

The doctoral programme consists of about two years of course work and two years of thesis work, in total 240 higher education credits. In the first year, doctoral students take required courses in mathematics, microeconomic theory, macroeconomics, and econometrics. In the second year, students take compulsory and elective courses. After the courses have been completed, students work on their theses and they are also requested to do a limited amount of teaching. Once the doctoral programme has been completed, the PhD degree is awarded.

Organisation at the Department

The Department of Economics is one of the four departments that make up the School of Business and Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg. The Head of Department is Måns Söderbom, who also chairs the Department Board where the graduate students have a representative. Randi Hjalmarsson is responsible for the doctoral programme. Christina Varkki is responsible for the administration of the programme.

The Board of Research and Third-Cycle prepares matters concerning for example admission of students to postgraduate studies in economics, appointments of supervisors and the establishment of individual study plans. It is also expected to further the Department’s research by supporting staff members’ career development, establishing principles for co-funding of research projects and compiling and presenting the Department’s scientific work.

Offices

The department is located at Vasagatan 1 (E-building, floor 5 and 6, D-building, floor 5 and 6). The workplaces are equipped with computer, network facilities and telephones. The head of department is responsible for decisions concerning the allocation of offices/workplaces.
