Rules and regulations for doctoral students

The fundamental rules and regulations governing doctoral education in Sweden can be found in the Higher Education Act and the Higher Education Ordinance. Based on these common regulations, the University of Gothenburg has developed its own set of rules regarding doctoral studies.

General rules for doctoral students at the University of Gothenburg

Policy on cheating, plagiarism and related offenses against academic honesty and integrity

We have taken it to be 'common knowledge' that plagiarism, cheating on examinations and related offenses against academic honesty and integrity are strictly prohibited in the University of Gothenburg Economics Programme, as in programmes elsewhere.

It is highly desirable that graduate students consult and help one another and, more generally, interact intensively during the doctoral education process. However, communication of any kind between students during course examinations is of course strictly prohibited, unless (in unusual cases) such communication is explicitly permitted by the course instructors.

Moreover, unless course instructors clearly announce otherwise, students are strictly forbidden to bring to examinations (and therefore to consult during examinations) notes, documents, books and related materials of any kind. Furthermore, course papers, laboratory exercises and other course assignments must represent, unless otherwise acknowledged, the original work of their author(s).

The same standards of originality, identification of collaborators and citation of sources for ideas, data and research procedures obviously apply as well to theses and other professional writings submitted to the Department of Economics doctoral programme, or otherwise written under the auspices of the Department of Economics.

Violations of the commonly accepted standards of academic behavior described above will not be tolerated. Incidents of cheating, plagiarism and related offenses will be passed to the University Disciplinary Board (Disciplinnämnden) and they will be viewed with prejudice in the decision process concerning financial support and in the broader evaluations made by the Graduate Education Committee concerning students' progress and standing in the Graduate Economics program. Finally, note that all parties involved in cheating activities and related incidents (that is, those doing the 'helping' as well as those being 'helped') will be held equally accountable.
