Public defence

Ahead of the public defence there are a few measures to be taken. You will find detailed information in the document "Routines for PhD Thesis Defence" to the right.

Notification of the thesis

The department should submit notification about the public defence of the student's doctoral thesis to the faculty office at least six weeks prior to the planned date of the public defense.

The notification should include the name and address of the suggested faculty examiner, the examining committee (which the department should already have consulted prior to the submission of the notification), the final title of the thesis and the date, time and place of the public defense. The main supervisor and the head of the department should sign the notification form.

Printing of the thesis

About six weeks before the defence day, the manuscript must be delivered to the printing company. You will find all the infformation about the printing that you need in the document to the right.

All doctoral theses should be published electronically in GUPEA (Gothenburg University Publications Electronic Archive). In Swedish, the e-publishing of theses is referred to as "e-spikning". You should enter the details about your thesis and upload it to GUPEA yourself. NB! It has to be the very same version as the printed version.

"Nailing" - public announcement

"Spikning" or ("Nailing of the thesis") is an academic ritual that originates from the traditional announcement of the defence. The student physically pins the printed thesis with a hammer and nail, no later than three weeks before the public defence in the main university building in Vasaparken.

Press release

The School of Business, Economics and Law would like to distribute press releases on some of the theses produced at the School. Please contact Marie Andersson, Communications Officer three weeks before the defence day. If your thesis is withing Environmental Economics, please contact Karin Jonson, Communications Officer.

The defence day

Time for you to publically defend your thesis! Your supervisor will inform you about the procedure during the defence seminar. The
opponent is appointed by the dean. The thesis will be graded either pass or fail. There is an examining committee, also appointed by the dean, that will decide on the grade.

After the defence

When you have succeeded in defending your thesis – and provided you have passed all courses required - you will get an application form for the official Exam Certificate from Ann-Christin Räätäri Nyström. It is important that you sign it and return it to her as soon as possible.
