The Master of Science in Economics is a practice-oriented degree programme that combines analytical tools with policy applications.
The programme is designed to meet the increasing demand for professionals with top quality skills in the private sector as well as in international organizations and the public sector, in Sweden and all over the world.
A recent study showed that the employment rate among students with an advanced undergraduate degree in Economics from Gothenburg was close to a 100 percent. The largest share works in the private sector, and many of them work abroad. Most of the graduates have advanced positions where they make use of the skills they achieved during their studies.
The Master of Science in Finance has clear objectives, related to applying the knowledge. The graduates should be able to demonstrate a deep analytical knowledge and an operational understanding of financial concepts, thereby having attained skills sufficient to apply financial theory to practical problems and working knowledge of empirical tools including software programmes from professional financial vendors and investment banks.
To this end, the programme is designed to equip students with a strong foundation in analytical and empirical analysis, and to educate them more generally about the research process in finance and related disciplines. Thus, the programme is primarily professionally oriented, leading to a job in the financial or business sector.
Graduates can work as, for example, fund managers, security analysts, risk managers, asset allocation specialists, financial engineers, hedge fund analysts, and traders. Career opportunities are chiefly with asset management companies, brokerages and investment banks, hedge funds, private banks and pension funds.
